Bloodstock Metal 2 the Masses Merseyside has returned with a vengeance this year. With heat 1 having already been won by False Thoughts, tonight (April 4th) sees the action hot up with scene veterans Ogun and Grind Horizon battling it out for a place in the final.

This year, all the heats and the final are taking place at Zanzibar. Forthcoming heats and the date for the final are as follows:

Heat 3: May 2nd

Heat 4: June 6th

Regional Final: July 11th

One of the most intriguing aspects of Metal 2 the Masses is how it works to unearth new bands, some of whom were formed explicitly to appear in the competition.

Andy Hughes from Deathwave Entertainment, the current promoter who organises Metal 2 the Masses Merseyside, has explained in the past how:

“I’ve had […] people forming bands, contacting me, saying we’re forming, and we are forming now specifically to be ready in time for Metal 2 The Masses and in those cases, I’ve actually encouraged that.”

This year sees several young acts entering the fray including the likes of White Lightning, Archaea, and Pthalo, as well as more established bands like OmegaThrone and Ogun.

In addition to appearing at the actual heats, this year’s Metal 2 the Masses Merseyside competition is supported by the Moore Metal Show, Liverpool’s newest radio programme that is devoted to supporting the scene.

The Moore Metal Show, which I am privileged to co-host alongside new metal music expert, Annie O’Neill, has been previewing the heats and playing music from the bands involved.

Broadcast every Tuesday from Liverpool John Moores University’s Moore Student Radio station at 6pm, the show especially welcomes submissions from Merseyside metal bands.

Interested bands should contact themooremetalshow@outlook.com.

Based on the quality of the music that we have played on the show so far, one thing is certain. Whoever wins the final on July 11th at Zanzibar will have certainly had tough competition.
